How the strategy works

The aim of the Joined Up For Jobs strategy is that employment services should be:

Demand-led, Client-centred, Joined-up

Demand-led
means that employment services should respond to the needs of employers in the city. Co-operation with employers should ensure that candidates put forward for their vacancies have the right preparation and that employers can respond to any specific needs of new recruits. Local Employment Partnerships are one good vehicle for doing this. The Employment Academies are another way in which employers are involved in the strategy.

Client-centred means that activities must respond to all of the needs of the people who are looking for work. Employability programmes need to be flexible; barriers in the labour market have to be addressed; and other needs like housing and health have to be considered. The strategy focuses on specific Target Groups to make sure that problems of exclusion are tackled – see the Document Library for more information.

Joined-up means that all the relevant services, agencies and organisations should work together in an integrated and coordinated way. Activities are planned, carried out and assessed in partnership. For more information about how we are using Information Technology and a shared database for joined-up working, see the Document Library.

The strategy is overseen by the Jobs Strategy Group, comprising the key partners – Capital City Partnership, City of Edinburgh Council, Skills Development Scotland (including Careers Scotland), Jobcentre Plus, Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, NHS Lothian and the Further Education Colleges in Edinburgh. Capital City Partnership is the co-ordinating body for the strategy and employs the Jobs Strategy Team. There is a Business Plan (agreed in 2007) and an Operational Plan.

There are a number of sub-groups which implement elements of the Operational Plan:-

  • Greater Customer Reach
  • Performance and Resources Group
  • Offers Delivery and Co-ordination Group
  • Health and Employment Group
  • More Choices More Chances Group
  • Communications Group
  • Skills Development Group

The Joined Up For Jobs Forum brings together all the providers working to support individuals to get into employment. Minutes of these and other working groups are in the Document Library.
